5 Brutal PT Truths No One Tells You

You may not like these truths. Some of them will be uncomfortable. But it’s time to get it all out in the open: physical therapy isn’t magic, and your recovery isn’t automatic. Here’s what you need to hear if you actually want to get better.
1. You’re not gonna fix it by half-assing
Showing up occasionally or “kind of” doing your exercises? That’s a waste of time. PT works only if you actually do the work. Consistency isn’t optional.
2. Pain isn’t the enemy (but ignorance is)
Some discomfort is normal. Sharp, stabbing, worsening pain? Stop. Tell your therapist. You have to know the difference between “hurt that helps” and “hurt that harms.”
3. You can’t outsource your recovery
I can guide you, push you, teach you—but I can’t move your body for you. Your recovery happens 90% of the time outside my office. Own it.
4. Quick fixes are lies
No machine, pill, or single session will magically fix you. Real change takes work, patience, and addressing the root problem—not just masking symptoms.
5. Speak up or stay stuck
Don’t nod along while silently suffering. If an exercise sucks, hurts, or makes zero sense, say it. PT is a conversation, not a guessing game.
PT is brutal, honest work—but it works if you commit. Stop chasing shortcuts. Own your recovery. Listen. Move. Repeat.
This isn’t a quick fix. It’s not a band-aid. It’s about retraining your body, building strength, and learning how to move without pain—so you can live your life without constantly worrying about what will hurt next.
Your progress depends on you. The exercises you do (or skip), the attention you pay, the effort you put in outside the clinic—that’s what changes your outcome. I can guide you, push you, and show you the way, but I can’t do it for you.
So stop hoping for magic. Stop waiting for pain to disappear on its own. Embrace the work, face the discomfort head on, and trust the process. Commit to yourself. Your body—and your future self—will thank you.
